We are having such great weather, so warm and summer like! This is unbelievable! Spring doesn’t even officially start until next week yet it feels like we have already hit summer. I don’t want to be the one who wrecks a good party but before you get too excited thinking spring/summer is here you should consider a few things.
This winter has been very odd indeed, warm and dry. They say that for some reason the jet stream is too far north and that is what is causing all of this. Who knows if the jet stream will actually stay up north or move south and if it moves south we could be in for some change!
If you are new to Minnesota you may not know this or if you are living here, it is always good to keep these things in mind. Remember that March is typically our snowiest month and really until mid April we can get pretty decent snow storms. June 4th is actually the latest date for recordable snow in our fine state. To be safe, the rule of thumb on frost is that it can happen until Memorial Day, but most of us wing it and use Mother’s Day as the last chance. Last year March and April were not too bad but May and June turned cold and rainy, so enjoy all the nice days when we have them.
When you have that urge to move your life outdoors remember the weather mentioned in the previous paragraph. Want to put out your grill and lawn furniture this weekend – go for it, even if it does snow it will disappear about as fast as it shows up. Want to fertilize the lawn – wait on that until mid April or so, snow will ruin whatever you put down now. How about putting out some pretty flowers and plants, the garden stores are all open and selling now – wait on that too unless you have a place to keep them indoors now and then or sheets to cover them with on frosty nights. If you want to start some vegetables for your garden you can do that indoors and bring out the little plants in May. If your mower needs a tune up now would be an ideal time to bring it into the shop before it is too late. Depending on the weather you will most likely need to start mowing in about 6 weeks.
Minnesota weather enjoys teasing us. We want summer so badly after winter but chances are it is not here yet. Save yourself the trouble of making things all nice and fancy only to have snow and/or frost spoil your hard work. Enjoy the weather this weekend!
