Last Saturday was my Guthrie Client Appreciation Event and it was a great success! A special thank you to everyone that was able to attend. We learned so much about the Guthrie Theater, things you would never even think about.
The history of the building itself and how it got to be built as it is was very interesting. They used a French architect Jean Nouvel for the design. Without the tour you would never understand why all those things that at first seem odd have been made that way. We got good insight into what his thinking was. They explained why everything takes place above the main floor, why the window are the shapes and colors that they are and why they are placed where they are. We had a look at all 3 theaters and found out what each specific type is for and how they can be transformed into different set ups depending on the production.
We also got a great tour of the behind the scenes areas. The theater makes all of it’s own scenery, costumes and wigs! One of the more astounding facts is that they have full time wig makers that make all the wigs from real hair, one strand at a time. Did you know most of the actors wear wigs? That is a lot of work! We were below the stages, behind the stages back in the dressing areas, it was truly a thorough tour.
If you were not able to attend, contact the Guthrie for your own tour. They offer tours regularly to the public for a nominal fee. It is definitely worth your time and you will want to see a play soon after your tour, it will set the bug loose!
